Australian PM says he will discuss "tougher gun laws"
The tragic incident left at least 16 people dead—including 15 victims and one of the attackers—with 42 others hospitalized. Authorities have identified the two suspected shooters as a father and son. The father was killed at the scene, while the son remains in critical but stable condition. Police have confirmed that no other suspects are being sought.
Speaking at a press briefing, Albanese stated, “The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary. Included in that is the need for tougher gun laws.” He explained that the proposed measures would include restrictions on the number of firearms an individual can own or be licensed for, as well as periodic reviews of licenses. “Licenses should not be in perpetuity, and checks, of course, making sure that those checks and balances are in place as well,” he added.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed the call for reform, emphasizing that legislation is required to prevent similar attacks in the future. “It does require legislation. It means introducing a bill to Parliament, making it more difficult to get these horrifying weapons that have no practical use in our community,” he said at a news conference.
The shooting has drawn strong condemnation from the international community, highlighting the urgent need for measures aimed at curbing gun violence in Australia.
