Australian PM to push for stricter gun laws after Sydney mass shooting

(MENAFN) In the wake of a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that left at least 16 people dead and dozens injured, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday that tougher gun laws will be discussed at a national Cabinet meeting.

The tragic incident, which killed 15 victims and one of the assailants, also left 42 people hospitalized. Authorities identified the suspects as a father and son; the father died at the scene, while the son remains in critical but stable condition. Police confirmed they are not searching for additional suspects.

Speaking at a news conference, Albanese said, "The government is prepared to take whatever action is necessary. Included in that is the need for tougher gun laws." He outlined plans to limit the number of guns an individual can possess or license and to periodically review licenses. "Licenses should not be in perpetuity, and checks, of course, making sure that those checks and balances are in place as well," he added.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns echoed the need for legislative changes to prevent similar tragedies. "It does require legislation. It means introducing a bill to Parliament, making it more difficult to get these horrifying weapons that have no practical use in our community," he said.

The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation from the international community, prompting renewed debate over gun control measures in Australia.
